Last night was my last time to lead the Angels and Spirit Guides group here in Austin. At the end of the evening, my friend Uri gave me a beautiful potted plant—an orchid. Uri will be taking over the group for me and isn’t exactly thrilled that I’m leaving, but he was pretty gracious about it and on top of that, gave me a beautiful phalaenopsis (my new word for the day).
I decided to look up the meaning of orchids and here’s what I read: “Orchids can impart a wide variety of messages, but historically the meanings of orchids have included wealth, love, and beauty…orchids have also been believed to carry various healing and protective properties, allowing them to ward off disease.”
How cool is that—giving a healing practitioner a plant that carries healing properties? Hopefully it has enough to protect itself from someone who hasn’t been known for her green thumb, or at the very least, is forgiving and able to quickly heal itself in case something goes slightly awry!
This is the third plant I have in my apartment. For years I avoided them altogether because it was kind of sad to have to play “Taps” every time one died. Now I talk to my plants and you should see them! You’d think this was a greenhouse I’m living in (well…I am in a third floor apartment with afternoon sun), what with how well they’re thriving. Or maybe it’s just because I talk to them. They seem to have personalities that respond to me when I come out of the bedroom in the morning, like they’re really glad to see me, and I’ve given them names so I can say hello in return.
At any rate, I have this really gorgeous orchid sitting on my desk and now when I look at it, not only will it remind me of Uri and his kind heart, but it will remind my that the vocation I have chosen is so much more than just a job…that being a healing practitioner is a thing of beauty.
